The Economist Intelligence Unit has spoken: Melbourne is now the world’s most livable city.

The only downside: thanks to the skyrocketing AUD, Melbourne’s cost of living is now higher than New York or London. Quoth the EIU’s cost of living survey from June 2011:

Of particular note is the rapid growth in the relative cost of living of Australian cities. Sydney and Melbourne are ranked sixth and seventh respectively […] Just two years ago, Sydney was ranked the 32nd most expensive city in the world and Melbourne the 38th. Ten years ago Sydney was ranked 71st and Melbourne 80th, while Perth was ranked 91st and Brisbane was 93rd.

(Your editor spent seven years in Melbourne, and still has a soft spot for it.)

Buy iron ore! Buy coal! Buy gold! What could possibly go wrong?!

(Incidentally, Perth has to be on that most-expensive list somewhere. Last time I was there, a dinner out at Halo ran to the wrong side of AUD100 for one person, two courses. (Great food though.))
