Lawns, and the getting off thereof

“Television is a vast wasteland,“ said FCC Chairman Newton Minow in 1961, “and get off my lawn!”. The NYT proceeds to draw a direct line from that speech - through Gilligan’s Island and Hill Street Blues - to The Wire and Glee, which is possibly the only time you’ll ever see those two shows in the same sentence unless the McKinley High kids decide to perform Way Down in the Hole at nationals.

Speaking of lawns and the getting off thereof, the SF Chron has a hilariously grumpy guide to this summer’s movies, specifically pitched at “13-year-old boys who like lots of explosions”. Sample:

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (May 20)

[…The] threat of multiple song-and-dance numbers is balanced by the addition of Ian McShane as Blackbeard. He was in a great series that you’re too young to watch called “Deadwood”.
