Extreme shininess

There’s a storm going on outside the window. No rain, unfortunately, although it’s knocked a few degrees off the temperature (which is nice, since it was still 28 degrees at 11pm). I whipped out the camera, and tried to capture a lightning bolt with a nice long exposure. Unfortunately, the sky’s heavily lit, with streetlights reflecting off the low cloud, so by the time I catch a bolt, the sky’s always overexposed. Does anyone out there have any suggestions for snapping lightning bolts, other than “move to the country”? (On that note, I’m heading home for Christmas… hopefully there’ll be a lot of shiny things to review and photos to post!)
