Um, wow. I made my first pass down the Little Collins strip since Christmas, and the sudden emptiness there is stark. Shame, since it just saw the arrival of Readers' Feast in November, hopefully resurrecting itself after the Borders implosion. Clearly it is my civic duty to traipse down there more often, and buy books as well as coffee from Quists.

Mate I just landed in Sydney for my assignment, it's stunning how expensive things are here, particularly food. Odd because if you have to import most of your food and retail widgets, you would think the A$ would be a boon for those kind of things sensitive to the currency and changes therein. Maybe the empirical evidence from FX pass through (or lack of) applies to australia as well as US? Not sure what exactly is going but now that I'm down here should be interesting to try and find out. Maybe fallout from the relentless yet subtle china QE and commodity bid??

Buy iron ore! Buy coal! Buy gold! What could possibly go wrong?!

(Incidentally, Perth has to be on that most-expensive list somewhere. Last time I was there, a dinner out at Halo ran to the wrong side of AUD100 for one person, two courses. (Great food though.))

For $6500? Assuming it's a traditionally-sized lot, it could be great. As you can see, Kalapana is at the <a href="http://maps.google.com/maps?q=pahoa,+hawaii&hl=en&ll=19.363948,-155.021896&spn=0.246813,0.308647&sll=19.410907,-155.159912&sspn=0.493482,0.617294&vpsrc=6&t=h&z=12"far edge of the lava, and very close to the beach. For $6500 and the cost of an RV, you have a place in Hawaii. Drive it on out of there if things get dicey.
