This is a pika: a small mousy-looking mammal, closely related to rabbits and hares. It lives on high, rocky hillsides – like those above 12,000 feet on Trail Ridge Road – and unlike most creatures that live that high up, they don’t hibernate. Instead, they spend the winter foraging for food and stashing it away as hay until the grass starts growing again – which can be as late as June, if the winter is as harsh as this year’s was.
