“They agreed to agree”

A revealing correction to the NYT’s article about this weekend’s big G20 finance ministers’ meeting in Seoul, emphasis added:

An earlier version of a headline with this article misstated the extent of a tentative agreement reached at a Group of 20 meeting. The group of nations did not reach an agreement on reducing trade imbalances — only on the need to do so.

So they agreed to agree, but they still couldn’t agree.

Did anyone ever really expect anything meaningful from this meeting?
