A large chunk of Rottnest Island is covered by these salt lakes. Formed by salt water seeping through the sand, and topped up by (very rare) rainwater, they’re ten times as salty as seawater – but brine shrimp thrive in the saline water, and birds flock to the lakes to eat the shrimp.
