I lived in Melbourne for seven years and never drove the Great Ocean Road. It’s 250km of twisty, winding ocean-side road that runs along the western coast of Victoria – imagine a half-size version of the Pacific Coast Highway drive and you’ll be somewhere in the ballpark.
So I rented a Merc SLK 55 AMG and went a bit nuts. 5.4-litre V8; 360 horsepower; 0-100 in 4.9 seconds; and electronically limited to 250km/h. Drop the top, flick it down into third, plant your foot… and the sound is absolutely magic. And it loves the corners – you can thrash it down a windy mountain pass (try the road from Winchelsea down to Lorne), and if you ever feel the back getting a little bit eager, just catch it with a dab of oppo and you’re away.
