Meteor Crater

Meteor Crater, originally uploaded by Shiny Things.

It’s big. Real big. You probably wouldn’t have wanted to be standing underneath this one.

Daniel Barringer – the first person to properly investigate Meteor Crater – was convinced that the original rock itself was buried under the middle of the crater. But we now know it disintegrated on impact; the largest chunk (about half a tonne of highly magnetic solid iron/nickel alloy) sits in the visitor centre.
