The Malaysian government is stealing Lee Kuan Yew’s paternalistic talking points in their campaign for an internet filter.
“It is to keep out pornographic materials and bloggers who inflame racial sentiments. We need to maintain racial harmony. We cannot have full-blown democracy like in the United States,” [an anonymous government official] told AFP.
(And of course they can’t have full-blown democracy – that’d mean that the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition would have to relinquish their fifty-year stranglehold on power.)
