The lighter side of swine flu

Did you know?

The production of anti-influenza drug Tamiflu relies on shikimic acid, which is only found in the star anise plant. Roche buys 90% of the world’s star anise production to make Tamiflu, and a supply crunch back in 2005 led to a worldwide shortage of the drug.

Incidentally, star anise is the magic ingredient that gives Sambuca liqueur its flavour. No word yet on whether swine flu can be cured by drinking Flaming Lamborghinis, but testing is currently in progress.
