“Hell and all its fury” – or – is it officially Black Saturday yet?

On the 16th of February 1983, bushfires raged through Victoria and South Australia, killing 75 people and destroying nearly 4,000 homes; these became known as the Ash Wednesday fires, and they were at the time Australia’s worst natural disaster.

On the 7th of February 2009, bushfires raged through Victoria, killing 84 people – with the death toll still expected to rise. This is now Australia’s worst natural disaster.

The Australian’s photo gallery and live report (parts 1, 2, 3 and 4) is probably the place to start.

(Side note: the picturesque old town of Yackandandah is under threat tonight. Your editor was there four days ago… photos TK.)
