It’s Sacrilege Night In Canada

A survey by Total Guitar magazine has named Celine Dion’s cover of You Shook Me All Night Long as The Worst Cover Version Ever.

Quoth Reuters:

“The number one worst cover song — Celine Dion covering AC/DC — is sacrilege,” said the magazine’s editor, Stephen Lawson. […]

Clips of Dion and Anastacia rocking are available on the Internet video-sharing website YouTube. One of the comments that doesn’t use strong language reads: “My poor ears.”

The clip in question is here – but don’t click on that link if you don’t want to see Celine Dion air-guitar-ing. Here’s the original instead:

(Side note: I’m surprised that Shania Twain’s thin, reedy acoustic-slide-guitar version didn’t rate a mention. Don’t click that link either.)

Second worst was the insipid Sugababes/Girls Aloud cover (link goes to the Guardian’s scathing review) of Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C.’s Walk This Way. (My gym had this on high rotation a few months ago, about the time I abruptly stopped going.)

Watch the original here – the evil capitalist running dog lackeys at Sony/BMG won’t let me embed it – then, if you’re brave, watch the cover version on Youtube at this link, and marvel at how unoriginal and derivative the video is.

Total Guitar are behind the curve, though. JRE reported on Celine Dion’s crime against humanity a year and a half ago, and asked whether it was grounds for invading Canada. We could always use New Zealand as practice.
