Downtown Singapore

Downtown Singapore, originally uploaded by Shiny Things.

Here’s the photos from my first day-and-a-bit in Singapore (including a nice one taken at dawn).

MRT to Raffles Place; wander east to the Merlion, then double back and walk west along the Singapore River to Boat Quay and Clarke Quay. (At this point my camera stuffed up, so I’m still trying to get the photos off it.) North across Fort Canning Park (which is a bit of a slog when it’s 30 degrees and 100% humidity), then back downhill to the hotel.

Photoset is here.

Two bits of trivia:
* Wikipedia claims that in Singaporean slang, “to merlion” means “to vomit”;
* Nick Leeson (of Barings Bank fame) used to drink at Harry’s Bar, a rather nice jazz bar on Boat Quay. They now have a cocktail called the Bankbreaker.
